Monash’s new dine-in experience recently opened. But how do the existing cafe owners and coffee drinkers feel?
The new cafe Sable Drop is struggling to attract students due to its hidden location, said Adam the manager of other Monash cafes.
Sable Drop does not faze Adam who said its opening hasn’t affected the service of his two cafes, Flipside and Flipboard.
“It offers something different from us. Whereas we try to focus on the quickness of service and maintaining a standard, they focus on a dine-in situation,” said Adam.
“They’re just trying to do their bit in here like everyone else is. They’re just trying to make a bit of quid.”

First year student Angelique Corfios, who is studying radiation science, chooses Flipside as her café because it’s close and convenient, as opposed to Monash’s other offerings.
“The coffee’s the same, the food’s the same, it’s just in a better location. It’s close to where I’m studying, I don’t have to walk far.”
Angelique was unaware of Sable Drop because of its hidden location.
“I didn’t even know it existed but now I want to try it out.”
